Moveable Rides
As I mentioned on my fixed rides page, there are two main types of amusement rides – fixed rides and moveable rides. Fixed rides are fixed in one place at locations such as amusement parks or waterparks. But, there are also moveable rides. If your child was injured on a ride, you should familiarize yourself with both of these types of rides. This will help you determine how to proceed with your loved one’s situation. What is a Moveable Ride?
A moveable ride is a ride that is meant to be moved from location to location. Oftentimes, carnivals, fairs, and festivals utilize moveable rides. They are set up for the duration of the event and then taken down and moved to the next event.
Because these rides need to be constantly put together and taken down, moveable rides tend to be smaller versions of fixed rides. If you want really big thrill rides, you will have to go to an amusement park where there are fixed rides. However, there are smaller, moveable versions of fixed rides, such as moveable roller coasters, Ferris wheels, pendulum rides, etc.
Common moveable rides at carnivals and similar events include:
- Carousels
- Scrambler rides
- Kiddie rides
- Small pendulum rides
- Bounce houses
- Fun houses
- Tilt-a-whirls
- Zipper rides
- Big slides
- Train rides
Common Issues with Moveable Rides
Because moveable rides are put together and taken down frequently, you need to be careful when using these rides. Moveable rides can be damaged during a move or can be set up incorrectly. These issues could result in dangerous accidents for those using the rides. To prevent these injuries, make sure the carnival or fair has rented rides from a reputable company. You can also talk to staff members to learn more about their process of moving, putting up, and checking rides. This can give you peace of mind as your family tries to enjoy a fun outing.

- Did the accident occur because a ride malfunctioned? Could this malfunction have been avoided?
- Did the accident occur because of operator negligence?
- When was the last time the ride was inspected?
- Did the ride comply with regulations outlined by CPSC and other pertinent organizations?
- Did your child contribute to the accident? Did they use the ride correctly? Did they meet the requirements to use the ride?
These questions and more can give you an idea of what happened and who is at fault.
